Another quick Painter experiment, done around the same time as the last one I posted. Forgot to post this earlier so I thought I would throw it on here now.
Hopefully will be playing with some new ideas soon, had a great chat today that has given me some better direction, so stay tuned.

Some Painter Fun

I am seriously considering making Painter a more fundemental program in my pipeline. There is something about the fact that it is stripped of Photoshop's image manipulation tools, and has such amazing natural brush texture imitations, that it just inspired a more confident painting style. I often use Painter to do sketches for fun, but I am increasingly more satisfied with them than my Photoshop efforts. Probably a lesson to be learned there about loose painting, colour variation and texture that will let me transpose the same confidence and results back to Photoshop...

Anyway, this was done in Painter, from imagination, and finished up with a few tweaks in Photoshop. About 30 minutes work.

New sketch experiments

A couple more recent sketches, both from imagination, but the first heavily based on the beautiful production art from the Lord of the Rings films, particularly that of Jeremy Bennett and Paul Lasaine. Unfortunately Im not fond of either sketch, and didnt do justice to the amazing work of Bennett and Lasaine, but the practice has taught me a few things that I will carry through to the next paintings.

Couple more sketches

Here are two new ones from today. The first was done in Photoshop this evening, the second was done using Colors on my iPhone over my lunch break.

Colors on the iPhone

I have recently started using the application 'Colors', which enables me to paint directly on my phone and upload the sketches when they are finished. It is a primitive piece of software when compared to the likes of Photoshop, but being stripped of all the fancy tools in Photoshop really forces me to focus on confident brushwork and good colour choices to create the sketches.
Here are a few sketches that I have been doing recently in this application:

One benefit of painitng in Colors is the ability to play back the construction of the painting and see how the image was constructed. Being able to analyse your own painting process can be quite useful for learning how to improve! The playback of my Colors sketches can be found here:

First Post - Some Recent Sketches

I will kick this blog off with a few recent sketches. On some advice from some more experienced artist friends at work, I have been trying out some different approaches to sketching to try and generate more confident paintings. Here are a couple of sketches done during some free time over the weekend. The first was done over the course of few hours, and i was not too happy with the end result. The second however, was done in about 15 minutes just before I turned off my computer for the night, and I am much happier with the outcome of this little sketch.
